Happy New Year, everyone! In this issue, I not only want to focus on what’s new from December but also briefly reflect on 2021 as a whole and what our focus for 2022 entails. We’ll start by rounding up December.

AdonisJS in 15 Minutes

We started a new series called AdonisJS in 15 Minutes. Its first lesson, AdonisJS Authentication in 15 Minutes was the most popular lesson we put out in December. The series itself will focus on tasks you can complete with AdonisJS within 15 minutes.

1. ​AdonisJS Authentication in 15 Minutes​
   We’ll be creating a new AdonisJS project and adding authentication to it within 15 minutes. You’ll be able to logout, register, and login with either your username or email.
   ​

AdonisJS Bouncer

The main focus in December was covering AdonisJS Bouncer. We released four lessons covering all the major topics of AdonisJS Bouncer using a role-based blog application.

1. ​Introducing, Installing, & Configuring Bouncer​
   In this lesson, we’ll introduce AdonisJS Bouncer, the first-party AdonisJS package for authorization checking. We’ll also get a start project setup and install and configure Bouncer…
   ​
2. ​Bouncer Actions & Authorizations​
   We’ll learn about AdonisJS Bouncer actions and how we can use these actions to check if a user is authorized to perform a specific task. Plus, conditional check authorizations.
   ​
3. ​Implementing Authorization Actions​
   We’ll take what we learned about AdonisJS Bouncer actions in the last lesson to finalize the needed authorization checks for our blog application.
   ​
4. ​Creating & Using Bouncer Policies​
   We’ll learn about policies and how we can use them to group resource-based actions. We’ll also learn how to create and share hooks with policies.
   ​

Let's Learn AdonisJS 5

We kinda continued our Let’s Learn Adonis 5 series. It took a brief backseat to Bouncer. However, we’ll be building back up steam with this series in January 2022.

1. ​Route & Controller Resources​
   In this lesson, we’ll learn what a resource is and how we can quickly and easily define a route resource and handle each resourceful route with a resource controller.
   ​

WebStorm

I started using WebStorm in December, which currently doesn’t have any native plugins to support the Edge Templating Engine. However, I came across a workaround shared by Ekaterina Prigara that uses VS Code’s extension to add support to WebStorm.

   A quick tip on how to add AdonisJS Edge syntax highlighting to your JetBrains WebStorm environment using the VSCode plugin and TextMate Bundles.

2021 Recap

In 2021 we released 42 free lessons, including livestreams, on Jagr and YouTube covering various aspects of AdonisJS. We accumulated a little over 50,000 views between Jagr and YouTube on lesson-specific pages for the year. Most of which came after August, which is a great sign for 2022.

Looking Forward to 2022

For 2022, we’re going to continue to focus on quality over quantity. Priority number one is to put content out there that’s going to help you all, not to meet some quota. With that said, our aim is to release at least 52 free lessons in 2022. We already have one out and a second will be released today at 12 PM EST. If we hit our goal of 52 free lessons, fantastic! If not, that’s perfectly fine.

You may also notice I’m beginning to emphasize “free” on lessons in this newsletter. In 2022, I’m planning to release some paid courses that’ll cover creating specific applications from start to finish with AdonisJS.

Don’t worry, I absolutely want to keep lessons that teach the basics and core of AdonisJS free. My goal here is that you’ll be able to learn everything needed to complete the paid courses with the free lessons. The paid courses should just be focused and wrap everything up with a bow 🎁. If you have any suggestions on what applications we should build in the courses, I’d love to hear them!

I also have a goal for 2022 to reach YouTube’s requirements for monetization. We check all the boxes except the public watch hours. YouTube requires 4,000 hours watched within the past year and we’re sitting just above 1,600 right now.

The Name, Jagr

So, I’ve been contemplating changing from the name “Jagr” throughout December. It’s vague and its Google search is pretty much owned by a hockey player 😅. So, I’ve finally decided I will be changing the name from Jagr to something new. I already have the name picked out, the domain registered, the logo designed, and the Twitter handle claimed.

I’ll be announcing what this new name will be at a later time, I think you guys will like it and find it fitting though. The new name will release along with the new “Jagr” site I’ve been working on.
